How the World Cup is being used to drive casino engagement

How the World Cup is being used to drive casino engagement
17 July 2026

The World Cup has always been a sportsbook moment first and foremost.

For operators, the tournament brings a surge in betting traffic, player attention and campaign activity that few other events can match. But in 2026, the casino side of the business is also trying to claim a bigger share of that attention.

Across the market, suppliers have released football-themed slots and other games, while operators have used the tournament to build casino campaigns.

But the early picture from affiliates is more mixed than the volume of football content might suggest. Football-themed games are everywhere, yet the best-performing casino content still appears to be driven less by the football theme itself and more by proven mechanics, familiar brands and titles players already understand.

“Every major studio timed football releases to this tournament — Pragmatic’s Big Bass Football Bonanza, White Hat’s Maradona Golden Goal, Hacksaw’s Le Football Fan,” says Emily Thompson, Head of Content & Senior Industry Analyst at SlotsRank

“Operators are using them as lobby hooks to pull sportsbook traffic into casino, and for that narrow purpose they work. But what we’re seeing on our end is that football-themed slots generate a curiosity spike, not a conversion engine. The titles holding lobby positions right now are the same evergreens they were before June 11 — Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Big Bass Bonanza. The football skin gets the click. The familiar mechanic gets the session.”

The Campaign Layer

That distinction is important. Football content may be giving operators a relevant seasonal angle, but it is not necessarily changing the fundamentals of casino performance.

For St8, which aggregates content from a wide range of studios, the trend is visible at operator level too. Vladimir Negine, CEO at St8, says the World Cup has become a useful promotional layer rather than a standalone casino strategy.

“The World Cup gives operators a reason to refresh the lobby and speak to sportsbook players in a casino context,” says Negine. “But the strongest results still come when that football theme is attached to mechanics players already trust. A football badge on its own is not enough. The game still has to feel familiar, rewarding and easy to understand.”

Negine says this is particularly important for operators trying to convert short-term tournament attention into longer casino sessions.

“Sportsbook players may click because of the tournament, but they stay because the mechanic works,” he says. “That is why we are seeing football-themed campaigns perform best when they are built around established formats.”

This is also reflected in the way suppliers have approached this year’s tournament. Rather than simply launching one football-branded slot, many have built broader campaigns that use football as a flexible seasonal wrapper.

“Looking at this year’s releases, the biggest shift isn’t the number of football-themed games. It’s how providers are approaching them,” says Georgii Pavluchenko at SlotRanker.com. “Instead of launching a single World Cup slot, many studios are building complete football campaigns around different player segments and mechanics.

He notes that football-themed slot strategies are becoming more varied. BGaming is a clear example, having divided its tournament portfolio into Casual, Entertainment and Classic titles rather than relying on one flagship game.
He adds that other studios are pairing football with mechanics that already have a proven audience, from Hacksaw’s Win to Win cluster system to Relax Gaming’s Dream Drop format and Iron Dog Studio’s Olympus-style gameplay.

“Overall, the strongest campaigns aren’t trying to reinvent slot gameplay. Football is becoming a seasonal layer added to mechanics players already enjoy, whether that’s Hold & Win, cluster pays, instant games, Plinko, or progressive jackpots. In our view, that’s why many of this year’s releases feel more sustainable than previous tournament-driven launches. They’re designed to stay relevant even after the World Cup ends,” says Pavluchenko.

Curiosity is not conversion

That sustainability question may prove decisive.

Tournament-themed casino content has often struggled with a short shelf life. Games launched around major football events can attract attention for a few weeks, only to lose relevance once the final whistle blows.

This year, the strongest releases appear to be those that avoid becoming too dependent on the tournament itself. Football is being used to sharpen the campaign, but the underlying product still needs to stand on its own.

Not everyone is convinced the market has achieved that balance.

“Anticipating a massive surge in interest around the World Cup, we actually introduced a dedicated sports-themed category on our site,” says Borna Valent at ChaseTheScatter. “However, looking at the data, we haven’t noticed any significant spike in readership or engagement compared to our other standard categories.

“To be honest, most providers missed a huge opportunity here. Given that this is an event happening only once every four years, it was the perfect time to launch something genuinely innovative. Instead, the market has mostly been flooded with lazy reskins of existing games rather than fresh, creative mechanics. Proven slot titles and familiar gameplay still seem to hold the upper hand with players.”

Sami Kurvinen, co-founder at CasinoWizard.com, notes that it is actually “surprisingly difficult” to create a great football slot. He notes that while some attempts, including Big Bass Football Bonanza and Le Football Fan, have been better than others, we are still yet to see a hugely popular football-themed slot.

“What surprises me the most is game studios’ decision to face reality and not even bother creating a football-themed online slot for this summer, even though I would have expected most slot developers to release at least one version each, as we often see around Christmas when game providers try to capitalise on the festivities,” says Kurvinen.

“Most likely, these companies concluded that it’s not worth the effort, as the challenge of creating a really good football-themed online slot is so great and time-consuming,” he concludes.

Ultimately, while the tournament creates a huge marketing opportunity, it does not automatically create new player behaviour.

“The volume of football content is generally high, but not all of it deserves the same level of visibility,” says Negine. “Operators need to think about which games can genuinely support a campaign, not just which games have a football title or a football symbol. The better opportunities are the games that give marketing teams a hook while still giving players a reason to continue.”

The football theme can win the click. But the mechanic still has to win the session.
